What is a Traumatic Brain Injury? Understanding What May Lie Ahead…

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the result of a forceful blow or impact to the head. The severity of the TBI depends upon many factors including where the brain was injured and if the skull was fractured or penetrated. The five most common sources of a TBI in the United States are as follows: falls, motor vehicle crashes, striking an object, physical assaults, and military service.

Depending upon the mildness or severity of the brain damage, a victim may experience some of these symptoms: headache, confusion, dizziness, lethargy, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, lightheadedness, fatigue, mood changes, memory loss, trouble with concentration, behavioral changes, vomiting, seizures, weakness, numbness, dilated pupils, and loss of coordination. All of these signs could be indications of a very serious head injury and should not be taken lightly. Medical attention should be immediately sought after any incidence of trauma to the head, no matter how mild the injury may seem.

Once a traumatic brain injury has occurred, there is little that can be done to reverse the initial damage. However, not only is it important to stabilize the patient and address the injury accordingly, new research into TBI indicates that treatments may be administered that can prevent latent damage from developing. Treatment for mild brain injuries typically focus on plenty of rest, ensuring oxygen flow to the brain, and controlling the patient's vital stats including their blood pressure. A more severe brain injury, on the other hand, may require surgery of one type or another in order to prevent more extensive damage down the road.

A brain injury can be a devastating, life-altering obstacle for not just the victim, but their family and friends as well. An individual with a TBI may have to face years of therapy and rehabilitation, which can quickly create rising and seemingly insurmountable medical expenses. Many victims of traumatic brain injury have lifelong struggles with behavioral and sensory issues. Additionally, they may be at a heightened risk for other brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
