NASCAR Cup Champ Challenges NFL and NHL to Protect Players from Injury

Posted on Oct 24, 2011

As head injuries become more and more of a problem for the National Football League and the National Hockey League, five-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has some advice. Take the lead of NASCAR, which has worked tirelessly to make a potentially catastrophicly dangerous sport a little more safer.

Many remember the tragic death of Hall of Fame driver Dale Earnhardt ten years ago at Daytona 500. Since that accident, NASCAR has installed impact-absorbing barriers along their concrete walls at many race tracks across the country in addiction to developing new helmet technology and restraint systems. The car themselves have been redesigned to better handle high-speed crashes.

"I remember the HANS device being carried around the garage area years before Earnhardt's crash, and we all looked at them and went, Ah, I've been through a bad wreck; I don't need that," Johnson said recently.

"So I think the leagues need to get more involved, and really spearhead and lead technology and safety together and implement it into their regulations."

Johnson said the NFL could benefit from some of the same tech used in driver's helmets. The NHL could take tips from the impact walls in racing and apply them to hockey arenas instead of wood or fiberglass boards.

"People love the crashes; people love the hits in football," Johnson said. "But still, you have to keep the athletes safe and protect their lives, their families, and put on a good show as well."
