New technology being developed at the Stanford University football team could help to better understand how collisions cause concussions. The mouthpieces, equipped with sensors donated by X2 Impact, a Seattle sports injury solutions company, are worn by players during games and practices at Stanford and with them doctors can try to learn if certain positionss and plays put a player at greater risk of traumatic brain injuries.
The information can be transmitted real-time during games to computers that are designed to pick up on data transmitted from the devices and correlate data to specific events on the field, such as a particular play or tackle, the university said in a press release.
Right now the University of Stanford is the only school to use the technology as it is still in its infancy of development. There are still many factors that tend to throw off the data from players taking off their helmet down to the human element of players not reporting injury. The school's women's lacrosse team is also using the high tech mouth guards.
